The Rhodes College baseball team opened the 2009 season with a 11-2 victory over cross-town rival Christian Brothers University. Sophomore Taylor Babich picked up the victory, working the first three innings. The Lynx jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. CBU tied the score at 2 apiece in the top of the third before Rhodes took the lead for good in the bottom of third with a 4 run inning, giving the Lynx a 6-2 advantage.
The Rhodes offense was productive all day with 13 hits, drew 4 walks, and took advantage of 2 CBU errors. The Lynx were paced by freshman leadoff hitter Travis Perkins who made his collegiate debut with a 3-4 day at the plate, driving in one run, scoring 3 times, got hit by a pitch and stole two bases. Senior shortstop J.R. Bizzell was 3-5 on the day scoring 3 runs, driving in another and stole a base. Sophomore Brent Lindsey went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, sacrifice fly, walked once, scored once, and stole a base. Junior Brandon Valentine was 2-4 with a RBI, run scored, and stole a base.
The Lynx pitching staff limited the CBU hitters to 6 hits, while striking out 11 and stranding 12 CBU runners. Sophomore Taylor Babich worked the first three innings striking out 4 and allowed 2 runs. From there on out the Lynx used a different pitcher each inning. Senior Charles Simmons struck out the side in the 7th.
Rhodes will return to action this weekend in Jackson, MS at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic hosted by Millsaps College. Rhodes will take on the University of the Ozarks on Friday at 11:30, LaGrange College at 2:30 on Saturday, and Millsaps College at 2:30 on Sunday.
